About

Hi, my name is Siegwalt Udo Kusel.

I am passionate about landscape and understanding the interdependence, diversity, and complexity of the world’s natural and cultural systems. I hold degrees in Landscape Architecture (BSc/BL from the University of Pretoria) and Archaeology (BA from UNISA). I have extensive experience in site and field surveys and possess practical knowledge across a broad range of subjects, including archaeology, history, geology, soils, plants, animals, and hydrology.

As a consultant, my practice and projects have always been multidisciplinary. I primarily work at the intersection or overlap of landscape architecture with planning and environmental management, or landscape architecture and heritage. The projects I engage with include:

- Landscape Archaeological Assessments + Land Restitution,

- Heritage + Archaeology,

- Landscape + Environmental Planning.

I am driven by an unrelenting desire to discover and learn. I always aim to see the bigger picture and incorporate the subtle nuances of nature, people, and place. My approach is always landscape-, ecological-, and research-based, scientific, and practical, guided by a strong academic foundation. I enjoy the project journey—returning for another look, experiencing it differently, jumping the fence, climbing the hill, reflecting on the past, arguing the flip side, engaging with the locals, and sharing what I have learned over the years.
