About

Landscape = Nature + Culture

My name is Siegwalt Udo Kusel

I have a passion for landscape and understanding the interdependency, diversity, and complexity of the natural and cultural systems of the world. I have a strong academic bias, and my approach is always landscape-, ecological-, research-based, scientific, and practical.

I am a keen amateur naturalist with a diverse skill set and practical knowledge of various subjects, including geology, soils, fauna, flora, and hydrology.

I have an unrelenting desire to discover and learn. I always aim to see the bigger picture but to balance this with the detail and delicate nuances of nature, people, and place. I love the journey, to go back for one more look, to experience it differently, to jump the fence, to climb the hill, to look back, to argue the flip side, to do it like the locals, to be the local, to learn and to share what I have learned.

I am a specialist landscape architect, environmental planner, archaeologist, heritage consultant and GIS practitioner. I have a BSc/BL in Landscape Architecture (UP) and a BA in Archaeology (UNISA). My project repertoire and experience include land restitution-, strategic planning-, policy-, environmental-, landscape architecture-, urban planning, rehabilitation-, restoration-, stormwater management-, heritage-, GIS-, and tourism projects.

The unique combination of landscape architecture, environmental planning,  archaeology, ecological knowledge, and field survey experience has enabled a particular specialisation.

I have become increasingly involved in land restitution projects as my combination of skills and experience allows me to provide objective evidence of historical settlement and changes to the landscape.
